Face contouring is a useful procedure in makeup, thanks to which we can cover our small complexes or emphasize our assets. Still many women do not use this technique, because they are afraid of mask effect, but properly done contouring is not conspicuous and emphasizes natural beauty. It is enough to follow a few simple rules.

What is contouring?

The trend of face contouring came to us from overseas thanks to Kim Kardashian, who popularized this make-up technique. It’s all about playing with shadows, so you can optically slim, emphasize, elongate or shrink different parts of your face. In short, contouring means lightening some parts and darkening others. You can contour with liquid products, powders or a combination of both, but in makeup the less is better. If you do not want to create a mask effect, do not apply too many products on your face

What do we contour?

Most often we contour the cheekbones, the jaw line, the forehead and sometimes the nose and lips. By applying bronzer to the cheekbones, we emphasize them and this gives the impression of a slimmer face. By darkening the forehead along the hairline we optically shorten it but we also create the effect of a light tan since this is the area where the sun most often falls. By emphasizing the jawline we model it and give it a sharper edge. With contouring we can also optically shrink the nose and enlarge the lips.

Wet contouring

When wet contouring the face, it is important to keep moderation and not to apply too much product. This is the most important rule. First, spread a thin layer of foundation evenly over the face, avoid the eye area, because it is best to apply only concealer there. The skin under your eyes is very thin and we usually have small wrinkles there, so we do not want a thick layer of cosmetics to roll under your eye and collect in the wrinkles. Then use a concealer that is a tone lighter than your foundation to lighten the areas under your eyes, under your cheekbones, along your nose line, in the middle of your forehead and on your chin. Smudge concealer with a dampened sponge. It is very important to begin blending from the light areas and then move on to the dark areas. The next step is to apply bronzer. To control the amount of product applied and avoid dark circles, it is a great idea to apply the product first on the brush instead of directly on your face. Keep in mind that it is easier to build up the contour gradually. Once we have the contours drawn, we move on to blending again. The secret to beautifully looking skin after applying liquid cosmetics is to carefully tap them in with a sponge. Do not press or drag it hard. After such a distribution of bronzer and concealer, the face is beautifully contoured, without visible lines and a heavy end result.

Dry contouring

If you want a stronger contouring effect, then after using cream products, you can also use powders. Both methods can be used separately for a satisfying effect, as the intensity can be varied. Apply a setting powder to the areas of the face that have been lightened with concealer. If concealer accumulates in the crevices, remove excess with a sponge before applying powder. Follow the same procedure for powder bronzer, applying it to the same areas as for wet contouring. Keep in mind that powder quickly sticks to the cream layer, so before you apply it, shake it off the brush or wipe it off with a paper towel. This will prevent unsightly blotches and streaks. Apply powder bronzer to your cheekbones using quick, circular motions. If you prefer dry contouring and are worried about the mask effect, use a large brush to sweep a setting powder over your face before applying bronzer. This will make blending out the dark makeup easier and prevent unsightly blotches
